  4. This document contains information about your Personal LaserWriter 
  5. NTR. You may want to print it and keep it with your Personal 
  6. LaserWriter NTR User’s Guide.

  10. USING THE CORRECT PRINTER SOFTWARE
  11.  
  12. You must install on your Macintosh the printer software found on the 
  13. disks that come with your Personal LaserWriter NTR. If you connect 
  14. the printer to an AppleTalk network, every Macintosh on the 
  15. network must use this printer software in order to print on the 
  16. Personal LaserWriter NTR.
  17.  
  18. To install the correct printer software on your Macintosh, use the 
  19. Installer program that comes on a disk with the Personal 
  20. LaserWriter NTR. (Instructions are in your Personal LaserWriter NTR 
  21. User’s Guide.) Use the Personal LaserWriter NTR Installer after using 
  22. any other installation programs. If you install the System 7 Tune Up 
  23. software on your Macintosh, install the Personal LaserWriter NTR 
  24. software again.

  26. Two disks called 'More Fonts...' and 'Even More Fonts!' provide additional
  27. TrueType fonts.  You install these by dragging them to the System folder
  28. if you are using System 7.0 and above.  To install these fonts on System 6.0.7
  29. and later System 6 systems use the Font/DA Mover located on Disk 1.

  33. USING TRUETYPE FONTS IF YOU USE SYSTEM 6.0.7
  34.  
  35. If you use system software version 6.0.7 on your Macintosh, and you 
  36. want to use TrueType fonts, you need to install the file called 
  37. “TrueType” BEFORE you use the Personal LaserWriter NTR Installer. 
  38. (If you use System 7, you already have TrueType, so you don’t need 
  39. to install it.)

  41. To install TrueType and TrueType fonts, follow these steps:
  42.  
  43. 1. Find the TrueType file on one of the disks that came with your 
  44. Personal LaserWriter NTR  (check Disk 3 first).
  45. 2. Drag the TrueType file to your System Folder. (For more 
  46. information about copying files, see the documentation that came 
  47. with your Macintosh.)
  48. 3. Choose Restart from the Special menu.
  49. 4. Use the Personal LaserWriter NTR Installer to install the printer 
  50. software you need. (Instructions are in your Personal LaserWriter 
  51. NTR User’s Guide.) Because the TrueType file is in your System 
  52. Folder, the Installer installs TrueType fonts.

  56. SETTING THE TOP MARGIN USING LARGER PRINT AREA OPTION
  57.  
  58. On a Macintosh, if you choose “Larger Print Area” as an option 
  59. when you specify the page setup you want, your application program may 
  60. place the top margin of your document approximately 1/8 inch too 
  61. close to the top edge of the page. When you print your document, the top 
  62. 1/8 inch may be cut off. To correct this problem, move the top 
  63. margin of your document down 1/8 inch when you choose the Larger 
  64. Print Area option.

  68. CHANGING THE SETTINGS OF THE PRINTER
  69.  
  70. Your Personal LaserWriter NTR is set up at the factory so that you 
  71. can use it as a PostScript printer with both Macintosh and IBM PC 
  72. (and IBM-PC-compatible) computers. You can also use the Personal 
  73. LaserWriter NTR with other types of computers. In addition, you can 
  74. set the printer to emulate a Hewlett-Packard IIP printer (however, 
  75. using the printer in PostScript mode is recommended).

  77. To use the printer with some types of computers, and to use the 
  78. printer to emulate an HP IIP printer, you use the 10-position switch 
  79. on the back of the printer to change the settings of the printer. You 
  80. need to change the printer’s settings ONLY if:
  81. • You prefer not to use the printer as a PostScript printer.
  82. • Your computer cannot communicate with the printer when the printer 
  83. is set to its standard settings.

  86. see the Personal LaserWriter NTR User’s Guide.

  88. If you change the printer’s settings, and you connect a Macintosh to 
  89. the printer through the LocalTalk port, you may experience 
  90. problems. To print properly from a Macintosh, use switch position 0, 
  91. 7, 8, or 9. If you choose a different switch position, your Macintosh 
  92. documents may not print correctly, and you may see a message on 
  93. your Macintosh screen telling you that the printer is busy.

  97. PRINTING BITMAP GRAPHICS ACCURATELY
  98.  
  99. If you print bitmap graphics from a Macintosh, the printed image 
  100. may not precisely match the image on your screen. To get better 
  101. print quality with bitmap images, choose “Precision Bitmap 
  102. Alignment” as an option when you specify the page setup you want.

  106. PRINTING DOCUMENTS THAT HAVE COLOR PATTERNS
  107.  
  108. To print documents that include colored text or graphics, you usually 
  109. choose the “Color/Grayscale” option when you print. If you have a 
  110. document that includes color patterns created with a drawing 
  111. application, you may get better results if you choose the “Black & 
  112. White” option instead.

  116. PRINTING FROM MICROSOFT WORD VERSION 4.0
  117.  
  118. If you have the MicroSoft Word v4.0 TrueType Printer Init installed 
  119. in your system and you wish to print Type 3 fonts on your Personal 
  120. LaserWriter NTR, remove the Init from your system folder and 
  121. restart your Macintosh. (Type 3 fonts are fonts created using a 
  122. font-design program.) The MicroSoft Word v4.0 TrueType PrinterInit is 
  123. only for printing TrueType fonts from MicroSoft Word version 4.0 to 
  124. Apple's QuickDraw-based printers (for example, the StyleWriter, 
  125. Personal LaserWriter LS, Personal LaserWriter SC, and LaserWriter 
  126. IISC printers).
